Area 1. The Whole-institution Approach
Group 1. Bringing together learning and knowledge for sustainability - innovative institutional development
Rio+20 reaffirmed the need to deliver institutional coherence for sustainable development, including at the level of economic, social, environmental and technical stakeholders. To be at the forefront of preparing critical actors to make this transition, higher education has to transform itself as a system, including the ways universities are governed, operated, and structured. The whole-institution approach calls for a philosophy and strategy for how sustainable development has to be integrated, holistically, throughout individual HEIs. This session explores such ongoing innovative practices and visions such as Higher Education for Sustainability Initiative (HESI).

Group 2. Assessment for sustainability
Amid rising criticism of dominant ranking schemes and the emergence of new discourses on the quality of higher education, HEIs and their stakeholders have begun to develop new approaches to assessment of its practices. These developments are complemented by progress at the national level, where nation-states have focused on modifying their systems of HEI's quality assessment. This session will discuss quality assurance as a process for transformation that is to be considered in combination with strategic, cultural, and political dimensions of higher education. It will also focus on the assessment and accountability of HE partnerships for sustainable development, including longer-term impacts in terms of educational and societal outcomes.

Group 3. Transformative leadership
Leadership in sustainability change requires current and future leaders to be able to process series of key competencies including system- and long-term thinking, dealing with complexities, and developing learning and knowledge across disciplines and sectors. This session will discuss these competencies as well as strategies to enhance and sustain leadership in higher education and leadership qualities in graduates, including methods and tools for testing and developing competencies for leadership in sustainability.

Group 6. Working with different types of knowledge
Humans have developed holistic traditional knowledge of their lands, natural resources, and environment over many generations. The need to learn from the experiences of local and traditional communities in managing health and natural resources (including biodiversity), supporting local livelihood practices, and maintaining culture has become of interest in the HE community. This session will explore ideas and practices where HEIs aspire to engage with other knowledge communities beyond utilitarian considerations, on new multilateral perspectives on cultural diversity, and through co-engaged learning. Among other issues, the session will focus on incorporating traditional and indigenous knowledge of sustainability into formal HEI curricula.

This session will focus on building bridges between the scientific and technological community, including HEIs, on the one hand, and public policymakers and policy-shapers on the other. The session revisits HESD in the context of the emerging post-2015 agenda. It will explore, among other things, the role of ESD in bridging earth/environmental sciences and the social sciences, enhancing the usability of sustainability-related information for decision making, and preparing HEIs in advance for a transition to a greener economy.
